At the centre of Kyoto, there’s a Nishiki market. It has more than 400 years history, so Nishiki market is called “Kyoto’s Kitchen”. There are more than 130 shops along Nishiki street (about 400m) composed of modern food shops, souvenir stalls, and traditional shops. You could taste and see several types of Kyoto food, then learn Kyoto’s original food culture as well. After Nishiki, you will take a walk around Gion (Geisha area) and learn the culture as well.

Nishiki Market

Where exactly do I meet the guide?
Meet at the south-west main entrance of Daimaru Department Store in Nakagyo Ward at 10:45 AM. The guide will be there to greet you before the tour begins.
Are all the food tastings really included, or do I need cash?
All listed tastings — including the sake and Japanese sweets — are included in the tour price. You only need extra cash if you want to buy additional items independently.
I don't eat fish. Can I still enjoy the tour?
Several tastings (yuba, sesame crackers, sake, sweets) are not fish-based, but hamo (pike conger) and some other items are. Contact the operator in advance if you have specific dietary requirements.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Nishiki Market is a covered street and Pontocho is a sheltered alley, so most of the tour is protected from rain. The Gion section is outdoors, so light rain gear is worth packing.
Is the Japanese omelette tasting always included?
The omelette is included when there are two or more participants in your group. Solo travellers may not receive this particular tasting.
