About this experience
The versatile and contactless smart Octopus Card provides you with hassle-free travel around Hong Kong. It is commonly used for payments on rides equipped with Octopus readers, such as the Airport Express, MTR, bus networks, ferries, trams, and selected taxis. The electronic card, which is preloaded with HKD 10 upon collection at the airport, also allows you to easily pay in designated convenience stores, fast food shops, supermarkets, and vending machines.

Frequently asked questions
How much credit do I need to add when I collect the card?
The card comes preloaded with HKD 10, but you must top up between HKD 50 and HKD 1,000 before you can use it for travel. You can add credit at any Add Value Machine in MTR stations, at MTR or Airport Express customer service centres, or at convenience stores such as 7-Eleven and Circle K.
Can I share the card with my travel companion?
No. Each Octopus Card is for a single person only and cannot be shared by two or more people travelling together on public transport.
What happens if my card runs out of credit mid-journey?
Simply reload it at the nearest Add Value Machine, MTR customer service centre, or any authorised convenience store. The card itself remains valid — only the balance needs topping up.
How do I get a refund on my remaining balance before I leave?
Visit any MTR Customer Service Centre at any station to request a refund of your remaining balance. Be aware that once a refund is processed, the card becomes invalid. If you collected the card at Counter A14 in the airport, that counter will not return the physical card after a refund — go to an MTR station counter if you want to keep it as a souvenir.
Is this card available for children?
This product is for adults only. Children aged 3 to 11 must purchase a Child Octopus Card directly at an MTR Customer Service Centre. Children under 3 travel free on public transport.
Does the card cover the Airport Express to the city centre?
Yes. The Octopus Card is accepted on the Airport Express, which is the fastest rail link between Hong Kong International Airport and the city. Just ensure you have topped up sufficient credit before boarding.
